A Brief History

Inter Miami’s journey began in 2012 when Major League Soccer expressed renewed interest in placing an expansion franchise in Miami after the Miami Fusion folded in 2001. Several attempts were made to bring a team to the city, including a failed bid led by Bolivian telecom entrepreneur Marcelo Claure and FC Barcelona in 2009.

The turning point came when soccer icon David Beckham, who had an option to purchase an expansion team since 2007, ended his playing career in 2013. Preliminary discussions were held with Beckham’s advisers, and other investors, including Italian financier Alessandro Butini and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross, also expressed interest in owning a Miami franchise.

After years of negotiations and presentations, Beckham exercised his option in 2014, forming Miami Beckham United, an investment group led by Beckham, Simon Fuller, and Marcelo Claure. The group’s goal was to secure financing for a downtown stadium. However, the initial stadium proposals fell through, and the expansion approval was contingent on a viable stadium plan.

Finally, in January 2018, the Miami Beckham United group, now including Masayoshi Son, founder and CEO of SoftBank, and Jorge and Jose Mas, leaders of telecommunications and construction company MasTec, was awarded the twenty-fifth MLS franchise. This marked a significant milestone in the expansion of MLS, with plans to increase the number of teams to 26 by 2020 and 30 in the future.

The Birth of Inter Miami CF

On September 5, 2018, the Miami Beckham United group unveiled the team’s official name and colors: Club Internacional de Futbol Miami, or Inter Miami CF. The crest, inspired by Miami’s Art Deco architectural tradition, features two great white herons forming an “M” with their interlocking legs. The team colors, pink, black, and white, reflect the vibrant and diverse spirit of Miami.

Inter Miami’s inaugural head coach, Diego Alonso, was announced on December 30, 2019. The former Uruguay national team player and C.F. Monterrey manager brought a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the club. Under Alonso’s guidance, Inter Miami embarked on their journey in Major League Soccer.

A Star-Studded Roster

Inter Miami’s roster boasts an impressive lineup of international soccer stars. One of the biggest signings in the club’s history came in July 2023 when Argentine attacker Lionel Messi joined the team. Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, brought his unparalleled skill and experience to Inter Miami. His signing created a buzz not only within the team but also among soccer fans around the world.

Messi’s arrival followed the signing of another former Barcelona teammate, Jordi Alba, in July 2023. Alba, a talented Spanish defender, reunited with Messi in Miami, adding strength and experience to Inter Miami’s backline.

These high-profile signings, along with other talented players such as Sergio Busquets, Rodolfo Pizarro, and Blaise Matuidi, have transformed Inter Miami into a formidable team in Major League Soccer. With their collective skills and winning mentality, Inter Miami is ready to challenge the best teams in the league.

The Journey Begins

Inter Miami played their first MLS game on March 1, 2020, against Los Angeles FC, ultimately losing 1-0. Despite the initial setback, the team showed promise and resilience in subsequent matches. Rodolfo Pizarro scored the first goal in Inter Miami history in a thrilling 2-1 loss to D.C. United on March 7, 2020.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the 2020 season, delaying Inter Miami’s first home match against LA Galaxy, Beckham’s former club. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Inter Miami persevered and recorded their first franchise victory on August 23, 2020, with a 3-2 win over Orlando City.

Miami Freedom Park: A Home for Inter Miami

While Inter Miami currently plays its home matches at DRV PNK Stadium, the club has its sights set on a new state-of-the-art stadium. The proposed Miami Freedom Park, a mixed-use complex, will be the future home of Inter Miami.

The stadium, with a capacity of 25,000 seats, will be located at the site of the Melreese Country Club near Miami International Airport. This ambitious project aims to create a world-class sporting and entertainment destination for the Miami community. Once completed, Miami Freedom Park will provide Inter Miami and its fans with a truly exceptional home stadium experience.

Building a Strong Community

Inter Miami’s impact extends beyond the soccer field. The club is committed to making a positive difference in the Miami community through various initiatives. From grassroots soccer programs to charitable partnerships, Inter Miami strives to inspire and uplift the local community.

Through its youth academy, Inter Miami provides aspiring young players with top-tier coaching and development opportunities. The club’s commitment to developing local talent ensures a bright future for American soccer.

An Ongoing Trademark Dispute

Inter Miami’s journey has not been without its share of legal challenges. The club’s name, “Inter Miami,” has been the subject of a trademark dispute with Italian club Inter Milan. The dispute centers around the claim that “Inter” is a generic term used by multiple clubs and cannot be claimed exclusively.

As of 2021, the trademark case is ongoing, with Major League Soccer filing an objection to Inter Milan’s claim. The outcome of this dispute will have implications for the club’s branding and identity moving forward.

A Bright Future

Inter Miami CF has quickly established itself as a rising force in American soccer. With a star-studded roster, a passionate fanbase, and ambitious plans for the future, the club is on a trajectory to achieve great success. As Inter Miami continues to make its mark in Major League Soccer, the team’s impact on the Miami community and the broader American soccer landscape is set to grow. Watch out for this rising force as they strive for greatness on and off the field.
